At Haydom Lutheran Hospital in Tanzania, children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus receive care in a dedicated unit. These conditions pose immense challenges for affected families, and the hospital is committed to giving these children a better life through surgery and ongoing care. In this mission, they are supported by the Haydom-Friends, a dedicated aid organization based in Hamburg, Germany.
I had the privilege of documenting the hospital’s work with my camera – witnessing both the young patients and the surgical procedures up close. At one point, I even had to operate the C-arm myself – in Tanzania, a lot has to be improvised. It was deeply moving to see the passion and commitment of the local medical team, working tirelessly to give these children a chance at life.
The Haydom Lutheran Hospital and Haydom-Friends provide active, on-site support to children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Their work relies on external donations – which are essential for enabling life-saving surgeries, follow-up care, and new perspectives for these families.
The “House of Hope” – A Place of Healing and Support
The Haydom-Friends established the House of Hope, a dedicated rehabilitation center for children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. It offers essential support to families after surgery.
- Rehabilitation: Children and their parents learn how to cope with daily life challenges.
- Training: Parents receive guidance on how to care for and encourage their children.
- Future Opportunities: The ultimate goal is to give children access to education and a self-determined life.
