In 2009, I had the extraordinary opportunity to photograph the SolarCar team from Bochum University of Applied Sciences at the Global Green Challenge in Australia. This international race for solar-powered vehicles led over 3,000 kilometres from Darwin to Adelaide and presented both man and machine with enormous challenges.
The vehicle: SolarWorld No. 1
The team competed with the SolarWorld No. 1 solar car, an innovative three-wheeled vehicle that was specially developed for participation in the World Solar Challenge 2007. With a length of 5 metres and a weight of around 230 kilograms, it was designed for maximum efficiency. It was powered by a 1.4 kW wheel hub motor in the front wheel, supported by a battery consisting of 532 lithium-ion cells. The surface of the vehicle was covered with 6 square metres of highly efficient gallium arsenide solar cells, which delivered an output of around 1800 watts.
My role as photographer
As photographer for the main sponsor SolarWorld AG, it was my job to visually capture the team’s journey. From the intensive preparations to the daily challenges in the Australian outback to the emotional moments at the finish line – I documented the entire range of experiences. The endless expanses of the landscape, the extreme heat and the tireless dedication of the team were particularly impressive.
Collaboration with Peter Keil: ‘Speed of Light’
After the race, we had an inspiring collaboration with Düsseldorf-based photo artist Peter Keil. Together we worked on the book project ‘Speed of Light’, which captures the dynamics and aesthetics of the SolarWorld No. 1. Keil’s photographic style complements the documentary shots in a unique way and gives the project an artistic depth.
An unforgettable experience
Taking part in the Global Green Challenge was not only a technical adventure, but also an invaluable human experience. The combination of innovative technology, team spirit and the raw beauty of Australia made this project an unforgettable chapter in my photographic career.
